Welcome
"Often I have not known where I was going until I was already there. I have had my share of desires and goals, but my life has come to me or I have gone to it mainly by way of mistakes and surprises. Often I have received better than I deserved. Often my fairest hopes have rested on bad mistakes. I am an ignorant pilgrim, crossing a dark valley. And yet for a long time, looking back, I have been unable to shake off the feeling that I have been led - make of that what you will." - Wendell Berry, Jayber Crow
I'm a graduate student at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va. The entertainment also includes a master's in Community and Organizational Leadership and two simultaneous bachelor's degrees in Mass Communications and Public Policy & Community Service. My job? Reporter. My dream job? Reporter. I'm thankful for every opportunity I'm given to let someone tell their story.
My experience spans the industry. In the summer of 2013, I completed an internship with CNN Newsource in Atlanta, Georgia. It was my first move away from home and a break into the network side of media. Newsource works with 900+ domestic affiliates. Throughout the course of the summer, I spanned the department. I served as a package producer for franchise packages like "Take A Look At This!" I also wrote and edited scripts and videos distributed to our affiliates. I worked at length with the CNN Wire, retrieving content from clients and posting photos online.
Heading backward, in 2012, I completed an internship with WCYB-TV/Fox Tri-Cities in Bristol, Va. As an intern, I was able to get experience in all parts of the local newsroom. I served as reporter, videographer, editor, and writer. I was assigned to several local stories while at WCYB, covering crime, politics, economics, and sports. My opportunities with WCYB continue. I currently freelance with the station, so stop by and say "hello!" if you see me in the News5 vehicle.
At Emory & Henry, I am Editor-in-Chief of the campus newspaper, The Whitetopper. I manage a staff of around 30 editors, writers, photographers. I am responsible for contact with all of the administration and our corporate relations. We're taking a new swing at things and always looking for ways to improve our impact. We're in the beginning stages of new marketing strategies in cooperation with a freshly staffed team.
I spent two years as a co-host for EHC-TV. With the show, I hosted athletes for a sports interview segment. My interviews have featured All-American and professional athletes. I'm also a sports commentator. I've spent time with WEHC 90.7 FM as a senior play-by-play announcer for men's and women's basketball, director of volleyball webcasts for the GoWasps.com E-Cast, and the Chilhowie Warrior football broadcasting team.
I am the captain of the women's varsity cross country team at Emory & Henry, and been awarded with multiple selections to the All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship teams for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. I also serve as President of the Emory & Henry Track and Field Club. I'm a member of several clubs and societies including the Cardinal Key national honor society, Phi Eta Sigma national honor society, and the Dean's List. I've traveled as a national representative for the Bonner Scholar program and Blue Key national honor society.
I have an passion for the communities I live in. I have served over 500 hours of community service while at Emory & Henry. I have worked as an elementary school in and after-school program tutor, lunch buddy, and chaplain's assistant. My current placement is with the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Abingdon, Va. I spend two nights a week tutoring inmates on the five tests necessary to receive a GED certificate. I also work with United Way as the Substance Abuse and Incarcerated Families Development Intern. I am currently conducting preliminary research concerning resources for families with incarcerated members in the southwestern Virginia region to provide opportunities for higher education.
If you noticed, the plural "communities" in the previous paragraph has a global reach. I'm recently back in the United States after living in Dublin, Ireland for three months. I studied at Dublin City University and I interned for an organization called Jobcare. Jobcare is a Christian charity organization dedicated to working with the long-time unemployed. Jobcare includes programs like Jobnet for nonworking professionals and Trasna, an ex-offender community employment scheme. My work with Jobcare ranged from developing social media strategies for the organization to facilitating dialogue in our Jobnet program alongside professional career coaches and executives from Microsoft. The experience opened up my eyes on my work from an intercultural perspective.
